Musical performances, Santa highlight Queens’ MarketPlace December schedule

Travel planners for Santa Claus have announced a scheduled visit to Queens’ MarketPlace in Waikoloa Beach Resort, Dec. 19 through 23. Children may visit him from 5 to 8 p.m. nightly at the gingerbread house and parents should bring a camera for photos.

This year’s schedule at Queens’ MarketPlace also includes free dance and music concerts in the Coronation Pavilion, starting with the Hilo High School Band at 7:10 p.m. Friday.

Then, at 1 p.m. Dec. 20, Sasha Knowles Dance Studio presents “Nutcracker…With a Twist,” a fun, new take on the classic Tchaikovsky ballet. Later that evening at 6 p.m., the Coronation Pavilion will host a free concert by the Grammy-winning Honokaa High School Jazz Band under the direction of Gary Washburn.

Arts and craft fair features all local products

The Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay will host on its pool terrace an arts and crafts fair with 27 artists from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and Dec. 19, 20, 26, 27 and Jan. 2 and 3.

Presented by renowned quilt designer and artisan Roma Marks, the fair will feature items including jewelry, tropical woodworks and blown glass, all required to have been made in Hawaii.

Live ukulele music will be performed. The event is free. For more information, call Marks at 326-4152.

Salvation Army to collect gifts at Walmart for needy children

The Salvation Army and Kailua-Kona Walmart will host a “Fill the Truck” toy drive from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday that will help provide new toys to keiki in need this Christmas. As they enter the store, Walmart shoppers will receive a list of suggested gifts to help fill The Salvation Army’s collection bin. The toys will be distributed to keiki in need in West Hawaii.

Book on Hawaii’s medicinal plants re-released

A revised version of “Practical Folk Medicine of Hawaii” by Likeke R. McBride has been released. First published in 1975, the out-of-print book now includes color photos of medicinal plants.

McBride combined his talents as a researcher and botanical illustrator with an interest in folk medicine to produce this book for students of natural medicines and Hawaiiana. The book is sold for $17.95.

Free identity theft workshop offered

Warren Chong, an independent representative with LegalShield, will conduct a free identity theft workshop at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 18 at Suite Possibilities, Suite 10, 75-5737 Kuakini Highway.

Chong will share information about seven types of identity theft and how to restore stolen identity.
